Should Thyroid Nodules Be Removed?

Thyroid Removal Provides the Definitive Diagnosis of the NoduleBy Lapropod – Minimally Invasive Surgical Care, Tirunelveli

Thyroid nodules are common growths that develop within the thyroid gland, and while many are harmless, some can be cause for concern. At Lapropod in Tirunelveli, we understand that patients often wonder whether these nodules should be removed — and if so, when and why?

What Are Thyroid Nodules?

Thyroid nodules are lumps that form in the thyroid gland, located at the front of your neck. They can be solid or fluid-filled and may go unnoticed unless they grow large enough to be felt or cause symptoms such as difficulty swallowing or hoarseness.

Are All Thyroid Nodules Cancerous?

No. In fact, most thyroid nodules are benign (non-cancerous). However, a small percentage may be malignant. To determine the nature of a nodule, doctors usually start with:

  • A physical examination

  • Thyroid function tests

  • An ultrasound scan

  • Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy (FNAB)

When Should a Thyroid Nodule Be Removed?

While not all nodules require surgery, thyroid removal may be recommended in the following situations:

  • Suspicious or indeterminate biopsy results

  • Rapidly growing or large nodules that cause pressure symptoms

  • Nodules causing hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)

  • Cosmetic concerns due to visible swelling

  • Confirmed thyroid cancer

Why Surgery Offers a Definitive Diagnosis
Even with modern imaging and biopsies, sometimes results are inconclusive. In such cases, surgical removal of the thyroid (or part of it) provides the only way to make a definitive diagnosis. The removed tissue is examined under a microscope by a pathologist to determine if cancer cells are present.

When Is Thyroid Surgery Needed?

While not all thyroid nodules require removal, surgery is recommended in these scenarios:

  1. Suspicious biopsy results – where cancer cannot be ruled out

  2. Large or growing nodules – causing pressure on the windpipe or esophagus

  3. Nodules causing hyperthyroidism – leading to symptoms like palpitations, weight loss, or anxiety

  4. Cosmetic concerns – if the lump is visibly prominent

  5. Confirmed thyroid cancer – surgery is the definitive treatment
